Sedation Dentistry

Page Summary
Sedation Dentistry
  • Innisfail Dental offers sedation dentistry to help patients feel calm and comfortable during dental procedures.
  • A comprehensive consultation is provided to review treatment plans, anxiety concerns, and available sedation options.
  • Sedation dentistry helps patients with dental anxiety, sensitive gag reflexes, or complex treatments receive care with confidence.

Our sedation dentistry options are designed to make dentistry comfortable and accessible to everyone—even those who experience severe anxiety about dentist visits.

We Offer a Range of Sedation Options For Our Patients, Including:

  • Conscious Sedatives - which can be taken before your appointment to relieve anxiety and help you relax. We are equipped to offer minimal to moderate levels of conscious sedation to suit your needs. Speak to us to find out what options would be appropriate for you.
  • Nitrous Oxide Sedation - commonly called laughing gas, provides relaxation and a minimal level of sedation. Its effects can be reversed with oxygen and have no long-lasting effects.

Combined with painkillers to manage physical discomfort, our sedation dentistry options can make your dental visit as comfortable and painless as possible, regardless of the procedure you're having done.

What To Expect

For any type of dental sedation at our office, we will first schedule you for a consultation.

For most of our sedation dentistry options, we ask that you arrange for transportation to and from your appointment, as some of our options may leave you feeling somewhat groggy or sleepy following your procedure.

Depending on the specific type of sedation, you may be asked to take additional steps as well. For example, if you've chosen oral sedatives, we may ask that you take them before you arrive for your appointment.

Once you arrive at our office, we will assist you to the treatment chair to get comfortable, then administer any in-office sedatives. Once these have taken effect and you are comfortable and at ease, we will begin your procedures.

In most cases, patients report little or no discomfort during the procedure. In some cases, patients actually fall asleep during the procedure and wake up once it is complete.

If necessary, we may prescribe you additional painkillers to help manage any residual pain following your procedure.

FAQs

Q: What sedation options does Innisfail Family Dental offer?

A: We offer two main sedation options:

  1. Oral conscious sedatives, taken before your appointment to reduce anxiety

  2. Nitrous oxide, which helps you relax during treatment.

Both are paired with local anesthetic to manage physical discomfort. Your dentist will help you choose the right option during a consultation.

Q: Who is a good candidate for sedation dentistry?

A: Sedation is a good fit if you experience dental anxiety, have a sensitive gag reflex, or need a more complex procedure. It makes treatment as comfortable as possible, no matter why you're hesitant about a dental visit.

Q: What is nitrous oxide sedation like?

A: Nitrous oxide (sometimes called laughing gas) provides relaxation and minimal sedation while you stay fully conscious throughout the procedure. The effects reverse quickly once you breathe oxygen afterward, and it has no long-lasting side effects, so most patients feel back to normal shortly after their appointment.

Q: What are oral conscious sedatives, and how are they different from nitrous oxide?

A: Oral conscious sedatives are medications you take before your appointment, offering a minimal to moderate level of sedation depending on your needs and the procedure. Unlike nitrous oxide, which wears off almost immediately, oral sedatives can leave you groggy afterward; some patients even fall asleep and wake up once treatment is complete.

Q: Is sedation dentistry safe?

A: Yes. Sedation levels are tailored to each patient and procedure, and your dentist reviews your health history and anxiety concerns during a consultation before recommending an option. Throughout your appointment, our team monitors your comfort and assists you as needed.

Q: What should I expect before and after an appointment where I’m sedated?

A: Beforehand, you'll receive instructions depending on your sedation type; for example, oral sedatives are taken ahead of time, so you'll need to plan accordingly. Afterward, because some sedation options can cause grogginess, you'll need someone to drive you to and from your appointment.

" What Our Patients Say About Us "

We have been with Innisfail Family Dental from the time we moved here in 2010. The staff has always been friendly and helpful and Dr. Champney has always been thorough and honest with us. All of my children have had their wisdom teeth removed at the clinic and we have had zero complications. The office follows the dental fee guide and if we’ve ever had a concern with service or fees they were quick to come to a resolution. Keep up the great work!

100% recommend coming here. Excellent communication from everyone and extremely accommodating, even with a toddler and baby in tow. Very good and patient with children getting their teeth checked too! Was unlike any other dentist experience ever before, and felt truly listened to and had all their attention during the appointment.

As always, we had another great visit with Dr. Champney and his team. They have been taking care of my family for 8 years, and we'll never switch. Everyone is friendly, personable and are great with my kids, since they were little and now into their teens. Dr. Champney takes the time to do things right and makes sure we are comfortable at our visits. Would absolutely recommend.
